      1. “Pen-” in Welsh meaning ‘head’ (as in Pendragon) or indeed ‘end’ (as in Pen-y-Bont, Bridgend)…

        Penarth = Bear’s Head, Penrice could be Pen-rhys (from the male name Rhys) or Pen-rhos, Moor-End.

        Confusingly, Pennard was also spelt Pennarth in the past.
